About Ajdovščina

VIPAVA VALLEY
This picturesque valley, named after the Vipava River, is surrounded by the high plateaus of Trnovski gozd, Hrušica and Nanos in the north and by the Vipava Hills merging with the Kras (Karst) in the south. Vipava Valley is the sunniest place in Slovenia, enjoying on average as many as 2100 hours of sun annually. The summers are hot, the winters gentle, the spring comes early and sunny days are always in abundance. A well known phenomenon is the Burja, a powerful wind, reaching massive speeds with brief gusts over 200 kilometres per hour. The grape vine and its richness of varieties is one of the Valley’s most precious possessions. Here, many classics thrive such as Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc,
Ribolla, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malvasia – with the welcome addition of old indigenous varieties. Lately, the most visible among these have been Zelen and Pinela, but Vipava Valley also offers the exclusive varieties Klarnica, Poljšakica, Pergolin, Glera and Vitovska Grganja.
The orchards rise right by the side of vines in the Valley and on the peak of the Vipava Hills. Cherry, peach and apricot trees decorate the Valley with their gentle blossoms in the spring, and in late autumn the sun illuminates the
persimmon trees with their orange fruits around the home-steads in the villages.

AJDOVŠČINA
The town of Ajdovščina is huddled inside antique city walls, having risen from the foundations of a Roman military fort. Many alleys in the old city core are narrow as can be. The restored Roman towers and lovely facades give this town
a truly unique appeal.
The town of Ajdovščina has played an important transport role since the ancient times. The Romans built a road, which led from Aquileia through the Vipava Valley to Pannonia. The Roman Road was of crucial importance as it was
the only link between the Mediterranean and Middle Europe. At first, only the road station Fluvio Frigido was set up and in time a military settlement Castra developed.

Sights and activities:
1. Featuring an imposing rampart and 14 towers, the Roman fort Castra has been protecting the eastern limes of the Roman Empire since 3 AD. Today it is one of best preserved Roman walls in Slovenia.
2. The Ajdovščina Museum exhibits artefacts from the Roman period and an extensive fossil collection from Ajdovščina and its surrounding area.
3. Šturje is a part of Ajdovščina with typical Mediterranean architecture. At the heart of the settlement is Cankar Square that you can reach through a network of typical narrow alleys.
4. Following WW2, this is where the first Slovenian government was founded on the 5 th of May 1945. The lobby of the Hall of the First Slovenian Government features a plaque and photograph of Boris Kidrič, Prime Minister at that time.
5. The Hubelj River springs from under an overhang uphill of the town, showing its full force after heavy rain. A circular natural science educational trail is set up along the river. The trail is 3 km long and leads through the mysterious
world of nature in the immediate vicinity of the town. It is interesting to observe the diversity of nature in the lower part, nearby the Hubelj River, and in the upper part, on the Školj dry Karst meadow.
6. In the 16 th and 17 th century, Hubelj was lined with ironworks, smithies, a paper mill, sawmills, flour mills, power plants and a brewery. The most recent development boom was based on the processing industry.
7. The Pilon Gallery, named after the famous local figure Veno Pilon, painter, graphic artist and photographer hosts Pilon's artwork and exhibitions by guest artists. The Lokar Gallery and the Lična hiša Gallery complete the art offering of the street.
8. The main piazza in Ajdovščina features small Roman thermae, showcasing how important bath-houses were in Roman culture.
9. This hike, starting from the Pale Sports Park past the source of the Hubelj River above Ajdovščina, and to the natural beauty of the Otlica Natural Window (Otliško okno), will take you on a tour of some of the best views of the Vipava
Valley, the Karst Plateau, and the Adriatic Sea. The well-marked trail, which winds its way along some very navigable terrain, is a great choice for a family trip.
10. On a hillock in the midst of the Vipava Valley stands a proud old walled settlement, the Vipavski Križ, one of Slovenia’s most beautiful monuments of cultural history. Visitors are thrilled by the remnants of its medieval castle,
marvelling also at the settlement’s attractive architecture and its working Capuchin monastery with a sizeable library where the famous preacher John Baptist of Sveti Križ (St. Cross) once lived and studied.
11. Recreational and nature-loving cyclists can enjoy in easy trails. By the rivers and the feet of the Vipava Hills, novice and younger cyclists will find lovely trails tailored to their abilities and designed to be family-friendly. Even if  u're
looking for proper challenges, this is the place to visit. The Valley's roads and mountainside single trails provide perfect inclines for serious tests of endurance.
12. On an agritourism farm you can treat yourself to some delicious prosciutto, home-made cheese and other typical Vipava Valley dishes, like strudel, rolled dumplings (štruklji) and jota. This is a sour turnip or sauerkraut stew with
potatoes, beans and an essential chunk of dried or even smoked meat.

Welcome to Ajdovščina!
